Blue Highways by William Least Heat-Moon First published in 1982, William Least Heat-Moon's account of his journey along the
back roads of the United States (marked with the color blue on old highway maps) has become something of a classic. When he
loses his job and his wife on the same cold February day, he is struck by inspiration: "A man who couldn't make things go
right could at least go. He could quit trying to get out of the way of life. Chuck routine. Live the real jeopardy of circumstance.
It was a question of dignity." Driving cross-country in a van named Ghost Dancing, Heat-Moon (the name the Sioux give to the
moon of midsummer nights) meets up with all manner of folk, from a man in Grayville, Illinois, "whose cap told me what fertilizer
he used" to Scott Chisholm, "a Canadian citizen ... [who] had lived in this country longer than in Canada and liked the United
States but wouldn't admit it for fear of having to pay off bets he made years earlier when he first 'came over' that the U.S.
is a place no Canadian could ever love." Accompanied by his photographs, Heat-Moon's literary portraits of ordinary Americans
should not be merely read, but savored.

In some parts of the world men build RV's on larger freight carrying tri cycles. It is enough for them to Bug-Out and
go on a fishing trip or just get away from it all. This bicycle born RV accomodates one person
comfortably, gives off no emissions, and provides the operator with plenty of exercise.
But if a man wants to he can build a trailer that is towed by a regular
mountain bicycle with 15 or 18 gear ratios. These are quite light in
weight and often made like a tent with fabric and tubing mounted to
a platform on wheels.

Some men do as their ancestors and build Shanty Boats and live on the water and migrate with the seasons to enjoy weather
that suits them.
They may have the main boat to live in and a "tender" with motor and
even a motorized bicycle to fetch groceries from the market.
These boats often catch rain water to store in tanks much like cisterns
and may use solar panels or small gasoline generators for electric. Often there are refrigerators that use multiple fuel
sources such as Kerosene, LP gas, or 12volt DC/115volt AC electric. Cooking stoves
may share the same energy supplies and even lighting may use Kerosene lamps. Chemical toilets are easily available and
can be placed in convenient areas such as the shower when the shower isn't being used. Water can be heated and gravity fed
from the roof of the boat. These boats are often built out of used lumber and the hull covered with tar to help
waterproof it. Usually a bilge pump is set up to run on both electric and hand pump.

Food Trucks are a growing trend in the USA and for the guy
who is trying to strike out on his own it may
be a solution to travel, work, and being self employed. If you are capable of cooking
and surviving inspections to stay in compliance with State and Local codes, then this style of life may
afford a guy a means to become "invisible" and
find a new life in this line of work. It can be done
with minimum investment and the more skills you
have the better off you are. Being able to work
on your own equipment, create your own advertising, cook or vend packaged foods, and
keep your books in order that the IRS would approve, then you restore your life after a divorce
or breakup. And again, a guy may tow the food
truck from town to town behind an smaller RV he lives in and parks in a State Park or Trailer camp.
There are many RV's with low milage that can
be acquired inexpensively. Even if he just lives in a
camper van, a short term membership to a Gym
will afford him a place to shower, shave, work out
some and refresh himself.

Today there are many Men and even Women living out of converted
Ford, Chevy, or Dodge Vans. These
are often converted so that no one would guess from the outside appearance that they were a
home on wheels. Websites such as "cheap rv living" will give
more insights into this way of life. The Van may be
set up to where it can be prepped for week end
recreation, to be lived in for extended periods, or
emptied for work related duties.

Even the Homeless on the street could use a push cart that could convert into a RV like environment, if they just had
one. Shutter to think any of us would fall into these circumstances but if such a structure like this could be built light
enough to be towed with a bicycle
then even the down and out could have some shelter and transportation. But it would likely have to be provided to them
by
Church Missionaries. Old bicycles that are picked up by the Police Dept
may be held for a month and if no claim is made on them, then they could be granted the homeless and rigged to tow the
cart.
But this is only a rough idea.

On Oct 14, 2004 a PBS show titled "Religion and Ethics" toured
a community of Tiny Homes that had been created for those who are homeless.
Many of
the residents had previously been home owners with jobs but
due to the economic downturn in recent years were living on the street or under
bridges.
This is an experiment that is succeeding.
Although these tiny homes aren't mobile, if enough
cities participated in building such villages, then homeless job hunters could use
these temporarily like "Hostels". It could aid their quest to find gainful
employment and restore their former lives.
